Conclusion

From the results of my questionnaire i have concluded that my magazine will be called underground and the main colours will be grey, red and yellow. The font i am going to use for my mast head is Elephant. The font i am using for the writing on the front cover of my magazine is Rockwell Extra Bold and all the writing on the cover will be in capital letters to help it stand out and catch the audiences eye. it is going to include Rock and Indie bands as they were the most popular choices. Underground will be similar to Kerrang and NME as they focus on the same genre of music i plan to write about and were most read by the people who filled in my questionnaire. My double page spread is going to be an article written on a band called KeepYourDayJob and will cover things such as there latest tour, up and coming albums and new styles. There will be one large picture of the band to show their image. The picture is going to be a mid shot so that you can see there clothes as well as there expressions. I plan to make my magazine entertaining and informative as these are the most important aspects and the main reasons why people buy them. For the picture on my front cover i am going to use a close up of a person so that you can see their facial expression and hair and makeup. the picture has to be bold to catch the attention of the reader. I am going to put some of the headlines in reversed out text with red or yellow words on a grey or black back ground. some of the elements in my magazine include album reviews, Music news, Gig reviews, Top ten new tracks and Interviews with band members all listen in the contents page.

Double page spread analysis

Double page one - NME

The title is in reversed out text this makes it stand out more and attracts your attention to it. There are little fillers to fill any holes in the double page. the main text is in the middle all together so that you don't get distracted by the pictures being in the middle of the writing. There are little captions above the images that explain what they are about. There is a drop capital that emphasizes the first letter of the first word in the piece of text. This attracts your attention to the writing. There is a feature box that highlights the further information about the band.

The main picture takes up one page and it is of the band looking moody and cool. the poses represent their personalities. It shows that they are a moody band and quite edgy. Then there are little images of the same band from different tours and performances giving the reader more information about the band. There is a quote to in bold reversed out blue and white text and this makes us want to read on and find out more about what has been said. There clothes in the picture also say a lot about who they are and what they like. The magazine is clearly for older readers and the band are very sexual and the page has a mature style with dark edgy colours.

At the side of the NME logo it gives the name of the photographer and of the people who wrote the article. The side is the double page is in a different colour so that we know that it is unrelated to the stuff on the rest of the page. It shows you bands who you may like if you like The Teenagers giving you the choice to widen the range of music that you listen to. The main colours on the page are blue, black and white, they are quite edgy and mature colours which shows that the magazine is for an older audience. Down at the bottom it shows the NME logo which is proof of the fact that it is in NME magazine and shows you the link to their website if you want to find out anymore information about the band or anything else in the magazine. Also in the corner of the pictures there are little captions explaining its contents.

Double page two

The main colours in the page are silver and gold this is so it attracts the people who like The Black Eyed Peas and R'n'B style music. There is a big reversed out text, pull out quote in the middle of the page for you too read so that you get into the story and want to find out more. The picture shows the band looking very futuristic to relate to their genre and style of music. The girl has her stomach on show to make her look appealing and the stances that they are in reflect on the bands mood. The main title is in a white box that is made to look like it has been lifted off of the page using the shadow effect. this is to go along with the futuristic kind of theme and also to make it stand out for the viewer.

The first paragraph of the text just under that large title is in bold this is so that it catches your eye and you don't have to look close to read it. It is there so that you read it and want to know more about what is going on. The band are being interviewed and the questions are in bold whereas the answers are in normal text. this is so that you don't need to read the whole interview to get to the bits that you really want to read and so that you don't get confused about who is talking.

Contents Analysis

Kerrang contents one

The contents page of Kerrang magazine has a range of pictures to show you what is coming up in the magazine all with a little quote to encourage you to read on. The colour scheme is black, yellow and white. This makes everything stand out and it relates to the readers and the genre of music. There are the traditional lists at the bottom with reversed-out text for the heading. The reversed out text is yellow on a black back ground and this makes it stand out. There are a few fillers on the page in the bottom right hand corner and top left hand corner these are small adverts that fill up any spaces left in that page. The main image is bigger that all the other images this makes it stand out. The main image relates to the main article in that magazine. The page number and article title are a lot smaller than the picture so they don't distract the reader but they are there so that the reader knows what page to go to. There is a pull out quote at the top of the page this is from an article in the magazine and makes the reader want to read on. There are drop shadows on all of the pictures and this makes them look like they are coming off the page this helps to grab the readers attention and makes them look more dramatic. The intro at side of the page from the editor has drop capitals at the beginning to emphasise the first couple of words. Also in small sideways writing on the side of the page there is the photo credit text that identifies that photographer. There are little reversed out text subheadings that split up the contents of the magazine. It is in different sections to show things such as the stuff they have every week and the stuff that is new.

NME Contents two

The first thing that you see when you look at the NME contents page is the NME logo this gives you a constant reminder of what you are reading and keeps the brand in your head. The contents page is clear and presentable because of the use of subheadings which keep all of the things in the right places. Also the Bold font makes sure that everything catches your eye and you don't miss anything out. The large image makes the reader want to know what is going on with those people and attracts there attention and curiosity. Also it is very clear that it is targeted at those who like rock music as the list of bands down the side are all mainstream rock bands such as "oasis" and "arctic monkeys".The list of bands could also persuade the reader to buy the magazine as there could be a feature on there favourite band. The contents page includes a taster article which gives the buyer an in site into what they would find inside the magazine which encourages them to buy it. The fillers in the magazine include adverts for subscribing to the magazine which is a way for them to advertise there product.

Magazine Analysis

Front Page One - NME

The body text on the page is the title of the magazine "NME" along with the title of the main article on the magazine. The writing on the magazine has cracks and sharp edgy lines to make it modern, edgy and stand out helping to represent the rock music genre. All the writing is in capital letters to make it bigger and bolder and help to attract the reader's attention. The header of the magazine is yellow which is the lightest colour on the page so it stands out the most. The NME logo is the biggest item on the page aside from the main image this is so that you can easily see what magazine it is. The logo is simple with only three colours and letters this makes it easy and recognizable. The main colours in the magazine, red, yellow and white, are quite harsh and edgy this is to reflect the kind of music that is portrayed in the magazine. The main picture on the page is Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters with a rather aggressive expression on his face; it is a close up picture to show his expression rather than a long shot because that would make it harder to distinguish him. The photo also reflects the kind of band he is in and his attitude. There are also smaller pictures all around the outside of the main image with captions underneath to explain why the pictures are in the magazine this makes you want to read on and find the full story inside.

Front page two - ROCKSOUND

The main feature on the front cover of ROCKSOUND magazine is a picture of The Gallows front man Frank Carter and The Automatic front man. The picture shows them looking very moody and kind of competitive showing the nature of that weeks issue. It also shows you a number of other ands that are in the issue in bold, reversed out text. The fact that t is reversed out makes it stand out to the viewer and makes it look kind of edgy and new reflecting the music. Also on the front page is a number of quotes from the issue that give you a preview about what is inside. They are to make you buy the magazine because you want to find out more about what is going on. Black, Red and yellow are the main font colours used on the front page and they help to make the magazine to look different ad appeal to the kind of people who listen to the music the is being written about in side e.i. rock, indie etc. The main title "ROCKSOUND" has cracks in the font to make it look sort of broken and rough the same technique is used in the Kerrang title. In the bottom corner of the page is the bar code and issue information along with the price.

Front Page three - Kerrang
It seems to me that the main target audience for Kerrang is 16+ teenagers to people in there late 20's who are interested in rock/punk/indie music. This is obvious because of the band listed at the bottom and sides of the magaizien and the central image that has been used. The central image is of the heavily tattooed Oli Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon. He is looking at the readers with a direct mode of adress which makes the picture quite dramatic. The block title looks as though it has been smashed and has the effect of a broken mirror which makes it edgy and exciting. it is clear that the magazine is trying to portray uniquness, roughness and edgyness to attract the reader. The colours used on the magazine are quite dark and this reprisents the stereotypical nature of the target audience. Again the main colours are red yellow and white as these clearly stand out and grab peoples attention.
